Put your fuel consumption on a diet

45792.jpg(NC)-A litre of gasoline produces almost three times its weight in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Did you know:

. The combustion of one litre of gasoline produces almost 2.4 kg of CO2. In order to burn completely, the litre of gasoline needs about 2.48 kg of oxygen. That’s why a litre of gasoline, weighing only 0.76 kg, produces 2.356 kg of CO2. The rest of the mass is from the oxygen used in combustion.

. Typical drivers consume about 2,000 litres of fuel a year. That means every car produces roughly 4,800 kilograms of CO2 each year, almost three times its weight.

. CO2 is by far the most prevalent of greenhouse gases that are contributing to global warming, and transportation is a significant contributor of CO2 emissions.

There are tonnes of things you can do put your fuel consumption on a diet, everything from car-pooling to maintaining your car properly. More tips are available from Natural Resources Canada at ecoaction.gc.ca/vehicles.
